I got the good fortune to get a few antique Kolu dolls in an antique shop in the city recently and I am quite elated about it.
The oldest one is a Saraswathi idol which is over hundred years old and its paint is almost completely gone but the idol still has a charm and uniqueness to it.
Other delightful purchases include 70 plus year old Krishna, Karthikeya, Shiva and Parvathi Golu idols. Their faces are painted in a very unique manner which is very different from what we get in the market currently. Each has a lot of charm and personality. Even with loss of paint, these are still very charming.
As you can see from the image, the Krishna idol has a different look and feel from usual moulds. There is a rare idol of Sreeparvarthi carrying baby Lord Karthikeya as well.
There are also a few 30-40 year old smaller Golu bommai that I got that day.
I am still undecided as to whether I want to have them repainted or keep them in their original look - my son is inclined to keep them as is, and I think maybe for this kolu I will let them stay the way they are, and take a call on this later! I don’t want to do a hasty repainting and lose the unique ancient charm!
